Meet the Animals - Horses

Guadalupe the blind mare

Beauty MainGuadalupe was in a Washington state feedlot destined for slaughter when a horse rescue group spotted her and called us. Blind horses aren't supposed to go to slaughter, but once they end up in a feedlot, no one ever notices or cares… except for rescue groups who try to save as many horses as possible from this fate.

When we drove over to Spokane to pick up Guadalupe, our initial impression was that we had just agreed to take a wild horse.

Back here at the ranch we put her in an isolation pen for two weeks, our usual practice for new arrivals in case they have any contagious medical condition. Guadalupe – or Lupe, as we began calling her – pretty soon settled down and became a sweet, easy-going girl.

It helped she found a boyfriend in Domino, another blind Appaloosa. For some reason Domino has a problem getting along with other geldings… either he picks on them, or they pick on him. We figured he just needed a girlfriend.

We were right. Now Guadalupe and Domino are inseparable. As soon as we start leading one away from the other – just to put them in adjoining stalls for the night – they begin to whinny to each other.

Even though Domino can be a bit pushy and domineering at times – the way some guys can be -- Guadalupe loves him anyway. Some gals are just willing to overlook that kind of thing, you know?
